River junior shows ‘rare dedication’ as world champion, teacher
The Union of Grass Valley, CA - Kuk Sool Won, which Reyna describes as the most comprehensive
of all martial arts, includes scoring on form, sparring, sword, staff and
technique...
Last April, Kuk Sool Won instructor Tony Reyna asked Ryan
Mathias, one of his students, what his plans were for spring break.
The 16-year-old told Reyna that he was going to be training for an upcoming
tournament — one that wouldn’t arrive until October. “That’s why he
wins,” said Reyna, owner and chief instructor at Gold County Kuk
Sool Won in Nevada City. “He’s so hard-working, so committed.
It’s rare to have such dedication.” “I’ve been teaching Kuk
Sool Won for 28 years and I’d say one out of every 10 years you

That is the consensus of a number of area high school wrestling coaches and

Atlantic Online -
When John McCain used the phrase “human cockfighting” more than
ten years ago, he was referring not to the less delicate moments of
electoral politics, but to mixed martial arts, a combat sport in which
competitors employ a variety of fighting styles to try to force their
opponents into submission. The sport is a sophisticated and violent one, and
when it first debuted in this country in the early 1990s, it did not fare
well. Following the 1993 founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship
(UFC) league, nearly 40 states banned the events, and they were disparaged
by many as a repository for washed up wrestlers and their equally washed up
viewers...

China Daily, China -
On a summer evening in 2005, an official from Shiyan, a city at the foot of
Wudang Mountain, in Hubei province, was walking home from the office when he
was attacked from behind. "I tried to get a clear look at the man's
face while fighting and found it was my teacher Li!" recalls Yue Wu,
who has taught thousands of college students self-defense skills. Numerous
others have benefited from the 40-something master's video teaching programs
on the Internet during his three-decade martial arts career. "Finding
the right master is one thing, winning trust and learning skills is
another," Yue says. Yue was born in an impoverished rural village near
Wudang Mountain, where the locals are fond of practicing kungfu for
self-defense...

David
Samuels interviews Ultimate Fighting Champion BJ Penn Bj Penn
Atlantic Online -
Hawaiian native Jay Dee “BJ” Penn is one of
the most talented fighters in the UFC. In 2000, he became the first
non-Brazilian to win a gold medal at the World Jiujitsu Championship
in Brazil. Four years later, he displayed his mastery of mixed martial arts
by jumping a weight class to defeat the reigning UFC welterweight champion, Matt
Hughes. On January 31, 2009, he will try to repeat his feat of
martial arts skill by taking on the current UFC welterweight champion,
George St. Pierre, who is regularly ranked along with Penn as one of
the top five mixed martial arts fighters in the world.
Here is a partial transcript of David Samuels’ ringside
conversation with Penn before the Rampage Jackson-Forrest Griffin fight last

Her
family ties are martial-arts belts
Modesto Bee, CA - Annabelle Jones of Modesto has lived by the
motto "The family that kicks together, sticks together." When she
married her husband, Rick, almost 20 years ago, she had one child and he had
three, and tutoring the children in martial arts became a way of unifying
the family, even after they had two more kids of their own. Their grown son,
Terrence Vandoorn, is a third-degree black belt, and now the third
generation is involved, with 5-year-old granddaughter Azaliyah earning a
purple belt this month. This kickboxing grandma is co-owner of West
Coast Martial Arts, a school blending traditional disciplines such
as tae kwon do and jujitsu with modern-day defense techniques...
Childhood obesity is on the rise, and one of the reasons is
that many parents no longer feel that the streets are safe for our young
boys and girls to play in. Finding a physical fitness activity in a safe
environment is priority number one. Kids karate and martial arts has a
laundry list of great positives:
Kids Martial Arts Builds Confidence:
Boys and Girls Martial arts and karate classes help the kids build
confidence through positive reinforcement and performing in front of the
group. Shy, withdrawn students come out of their shells and get comfortable
performing and explaining various martial arts techniques in front of their
fellow dojo members.
Kurt
Angle Is Still Lying About Competing in Mixed Martial Arts Bloody
Elbow -Luke Thomas Kurt Angle did an interview on the "Big O &
Dukes" show on 106.7 WJFK this afternoon (entire
interview here). Characteristically, he says he's working towards
getting involved in MMA, but a) he's busy and needs to sort out some issues
that conflict with his ability to fully commit to MMA and b) it depends on
what sort of offer Affliction or the UFC make him.
Kurt, you're lying. You've been talking about entering MMA
for over two years now without a shred of progress. You've constantly got an
excuse for not yet signing on the dotted line, yet you're perfectly willing
to suggest you're capable of beating the top-end fighters. You've got no
kickboxing experience, you've got no submission wrestling experience and
you've got no MMA experience. You are 38 and your career has been one filled
with severe injuries. While your wrestling background is incredible and
worthy of the highest regard, your professional wrestling antics of phony
hype, bluster and unfulfilled future promises does not hold water in this
sport.

AKF
Martial Arts
Geneva Sun, IL -
I've never been in a fist fight, I said to Craig Hutson, owner
and head instructor at AKF Martial Arts Dragon Kyuki-Do. I've
often wondered how I'd do. But hey, I'm not curious enough to risk getting
hurt. "A lot of people feel the same way," said Hutson. "This
is a good place to determine your level of comfort with physical and social
adversity. We have many expert fighters here who have never been in a street
fight. People come in here hoping that with regular practice, they can gain
the self-confidence to succeed at stopping a physical attack. That's why
they do it." And not just men. Hutson has female students too, he said,
who want more physical presence and more self-confidence...
